On tour with The Coffee Pot Book Club — The Curse of Maiden Scars by Nicolette Croft #HistoricalFiction #WomensFiction #Venice #BlogTour #TheCoffeePotBookClub @croft_nicolette @cathiedunn

Oh look, there is another book that you really need to add to your to-read list. Scroll down and read an excerpt from The Curse of Maiden Scars.

The Curse of Maiden Scars
By Nicolette Croft
Coming in August 2024: Audiobook narrated by Liz May Brice

Sixteen-year-old Renna Covert toils away in the shadows of a Yorkshire workhouse, her days filled with the mundane task of shelling cotton and the dangerous duty of scouting for punters. One fateful night, she crosses paths with two sailors and finds herself thrust into the heart of a chilling encounter at the local asylum.

These harrowing experiences catalyze Renna’s journey, promising newfound opportunities and revealing long-buried family secrets. Yet, at every turn, powerful forces conspire to thwart her quest for truth, forcing her to abandon her scullery work and embark on a daring escape to Venice alongside her steadfast companions.

In the labyrinthine alleys of Venice, Renna’s fate takes yet another twist. She is ensnared by a cunning Madam who trains her as a Venetian courtesan. But beneath the veneer of luxury lies a world fraught with danger, where Renna must rely on her withs and resilience to navigate the treacherous waters of deceit and betrayal.

Set against the backdrop of Venice’s tumultuous Napoleonic invasion of 1797, this is a tale of a girl's struggle for survival. It is a story of resilience, defiance in the face of adversity, and, ultimately, one young woman’s determination to reclaim her identity.

Excerpt

Taking the seat and tapping Francese’s cage, awakening him, I perched at my dressing table and bore Mother’s attention. I hoped her assistance meant she felt regret for her treatment of me. Of course, I could never trust or forgive her, for I was no longer naïve to her machinations. She spoke little as she arranged the wig, tightly securing it with pins to a bun of my hair. She positioned me where I could not take in my likeness, covertly completing her task. I caught a whiff of the tresses as they brushed against my nose. The smell reminded me of the asylum.

“How did you learn about social expectations?” I was genuinely interested.

“Venice was not always my life. I had a family and was raised as a lady.”

I craned to see her face in the mirror, but she stood too far in the periphery. “Camilla said you came from a good family, and there were once three of you. Neither of you ever name your other sister. What happened?”

“She died.” Mother pushed me toward the mirror. “Tell me what you think.”

My questions vanished from me as I admired her work. I couldn’t believe it was me—skin white, flawless like new porcelain. Charcoal outlined my hazel eyes and accentuated the gold fleck. The bright rouge on my cheeks left a healthy complexion. All was topped with the silkily plated wig as if it had been gilded.

I looked at her with astonishment, “Is this me?”

She appeared satisfied. Her fingers brushed the base of my neck. “You are stunning” Her coloring changed, cheeks reddening as the light in her eyes faded as if she had let something slip.
I took the reaction as regret for an inadvertent compliment. Watching myself in the mirror, I needlessly fixed my hair at the side of the wig and elegantly positioned my head. “I don’t know what my mother resembled, but at this moment, I’m glad to embody myself.” Haughty, indeed, but she had made me beautiful, unbelievably so.

Doesn't this book sound amazing?! If you fancy grabbing yourself a copy head over to Amazon.

Nicolette Croft

Nicolette Croft can’t remember a time when she was not creating imaginary worlds inspired by her Hungarian and American ancestors. As a neuro-divergent learner, however, putting those stories to paper proved more challenging than imagining them. Because her determination would not allow her to settle, she pursued an English B.A. to improve her writing.

Young motherhood also brought unexpected challenges, which motivated her to pursue graduate work in twice-exceptional learners and education. She would later add an M.A. degree in Clinical Mental Health Counseling, specializing in neurodivergent people, trauma, and grief. Nicolette uses her natural gift of storytelling as an exploratory method for her clients.

The Curse of Maiden Scars is also an outgrowth of her personal journey and marks her first publication as a novelist, having previously published short fiction. When not at her counseling practice or researching historical facts for her latest story, Nicolette shares treasured time with family, friends, and her husband. Whether writing, cooking, traveling, or learning, the act of creation is always at the center of her colorful life.

On tour with The Coffee Pot Book Club — Novice Threads by Nancy Jardine #BookReview #HistoricalFiction #Scotland @nansjar @cathiedunn

I love this book so much! Scroll down to check out my review of Novice Threads by Nancy Jardine. Thank you to The Coffee Pot Book Club for inviting me to be a part of this tour.

Let's check out the blurb!

Novice Threads
By Nancy Jardine

A thirst for education.  Shattered dreams. Fragile relations.

1840s Scotland

Being sent to school is the most exhilarating thing that’s ever happened to young Margaret Law. She sharpens her newly-acquired education on her best friend, Jessie Morison, till Jessie is spirited away to become a scullery maid. But how can Margaret fulfil her visions of becoming a schoolteacher when her parents’ tailoring and drapery business suddenly collapses and she must find a job?

Salvation from domestic drudgery – or never-ending seamstress work – comes via Jessie whose employer seeks a tutor for his daughter. Free time exploring Edinburgh with Jessie is great fun, but increasing tension in the household claws at Margaret’s nerves.

Margaret also worries about her parents' estrangement, and the mystery of Jessie's unknown father.

When tragedy befalls the household in Edinburgh, Margaret must forge a new pathway for the future – though where will that be?

Margaret Law's parents would sink the Titanic with their coldness towards their only child, but what they do provide is the means for an education. Although seemingly unloving, Penny does not want her daughter working at the local mill. An education, Penny knows all too well, can go a long way.

Like a sponge, Margaret soaks up everything she is taught. And she sets her sights on one day becoming a teacher (although her plans do not go exactly the way she envisages). Margaret would have been quite content with her lot if her best friend Jessie was with her.

Jessie is a darling little girl who puts her immediate family's needs before her own. Before even reaching double figures, she becomes a carer for her arthritic grandmother, but despite her, somewhat depressed situation she remains a rainbow of joy.

But Margaret and Jessie's lives are about to change forever, but thankfully whatever befalls them they are in this together.

I loved, loved, loved this book! I thought the way the author portrayed the children was amazing. At the beginning of the novel, they are infants and therefore talk like infants, but as they age so does their vocabulary, along with their understanding of it.

The story is truly gripping and it kept me up when I should have been sleeping, so I am writing this review with tired eyes! I thought the characters were wonderfully depicted and the historic setting was very realistic.

As I have already said, I absolutely loved this book and it is my favourite read so far in 2024!

If you would like to grab yourself a copy of this book then head over to Amazon. And check this out, it is free to read if you have #KindleUnlimited subscription. So what are you waiting for? This book isn't going to read itself!

Book Review of Love Lost In Time by Cathie Dunn.

Scroll down to read my 5 STAR review of Love Lost In Time by Cathie Dunn.

Love Lost in Time
By Cathie Dunn

A reluctant daughter. A dutiful wife. A mystery of the ages.

Languedoc, France, 2018

Historian Madeleine Winters would rather research her next project than rehash the strained relationship she had with her late mother. However, to claim her inheritance, she reluctantly agrees to stay the one year required in her late mother’s French home and begins renovations. But when she’s haunted by a female voice inside the house and tremors emanating from beneath her kitchen floorboards, she’s shocked to discover ancient human bones.

The Mediterranean coast, AD 777

Seventeen-year-old Nanthild is wise enough to know her place. Hiding her Pagan wisdom and dutifully accepting her political marriage, she’s surprised when she falls for her Christian husband, the Count of Carcassonne. But she struggles to keep her forbidden religious beliefs and her healing skills secret while her spouse goes off to fight in a terrible, bloody war.

As Maddie settles into her rustic village life, she becomes obsessed with unraveling the mysterious history buried in her new home. And when Nanthild is caught in the snare of an envious man, she’s terrified she’ll never embrace her beloved again.

Can two women torn apart by centuries help each other finally find peace?

On tour with The Coffee Pot Book Club — Katharine’s Remarkable Road Trip by Gail Ward Olmsted #HistoricalFiction #CivilWarNurses #BiographicalFiction @gwolmsted @cathiedunn

Are you ready for a road trip?

If the answer is yes, then check out Katharine’s Remarkable Road Trip by Gail Ward Olmsted. Scroll down to read a short excerpt from the book.

Katharine’s Remarkable Road Trip
By Gail Ward Olmsted

In the fall of 1907, Katharine decides to drive from Newport, Rhode Island, to her home in Jackson, New Hampshire. Despite the concerns of her family and friends, that at the age of 77 she lacks the stamina for the nearly 300-mile journey, Katharine sets out alone. Over the next six days, she receives a marriage proposal, pulls an all-nighter, saves a life or two, crashes a high-society event, meets a kindred spirit, faces a former rival, makes a new friend, takes a stroll with a future movie mogul, advises a troubled newlywed, and reflects upon a life well lived; her own!

Join her as she embarks upon her remarkable road trip.

Katharine Prescott Wormeley (1830-1908) was born into affluence in England and emigrated to the U. S. at the age of eighteen. Fiercely independent and never married, Kate volunteered as a nurse on a medical ship during the Civil War, before founding a vocational school for underprivileged girls. A lifelong friend and trusted confidante of landscape architect Frederick Law Olmsted, she was a philanthropist, a hospital administrator, and the author of The Other Side of War: 1862, as well as the noted translator of dozens of novels written by French authors, including Moliere and Balzac. She is included in History’s Women: The Unsung Heroines; History of American Women: Civil War Women; Who’s Who in America 1908-09; Notable American Women, A Biographical Dictionary: 1607-1950 and A Woman of the 19th Century: Leading American Women in All Walks of Life.

Excerpt

On her working relationship with Frederick Law Olmsted, Executive Secretary of the United State Sanitary Commission

Working for Mr. Olmsted, as I continued to call him for a time before he insisted that I call him Fred, was never dull, an understatement if ever I’d made one. He was mostly affable and pleasant to deal with, but his rule was absolute and no one dared to question any of his decisions. Some of the staff appeared to walk on eggshells when he was around, but not me.

Of course, I was always respectful and exceedingly polite, but I’d had no issue with asking for clarification of a direct order, requesting minor changes to policies and procedures, and asking, as needed, for forgiveness instead of permission. He was, to my mind, always fair and courteous. I had no issue with forgiving his occasional lapse into a thorough dressing down of the random worker or two when their behavior had negatively affected one of our patients. I would have liked to give the offender a thorough tongue-lashing of my own, but I knew my role on board and it was not that of an enforcer of the rules nor was I allowed to mete out any punishment. I was there solely for the purpose of assisting the doctors in our efforts to improve the health and lives of the wounded men. And that was fine with me.

On tour with The Coffee Pot Book Club — Shire's Union Trilogy by Richard Buxton #AmericanCivilWar #Historical Fiction #BlogTour @RichardBuxton65 @cathiedunn

You can not consider yourself a proper bookworm unless you have, at one point, got totally lost in a series. So, if you are looking for your next historical fiction series then why not check out Shire's Union Trilogy by Richard Buxton. It is set during the American Civil War and one of the books has been shortlisted for Rubery International Book Award.

Scroll down to find out more!

Whirligig (Book 1)

Shire leaves his home and his life in Victorian England for the sake of a childhood promise, a promise that pulls him into the bleeding heart of the American Civil War. Lost in the bloody battlefields of the West, he discovers a second home for his loyalty.

Clara believes she has escaped from a predictable future of obligation and privilege, but her new life in the Appalachian Hills of Tennessee is decaying around her. In the mansion of Comrie, long hidden secrets are being slowly exhumed by a war that creeps ever closer.

The Shire’s Union trilogy is at once an outsider’s odyssey through the battle for Tennessee, a touching story of impossible love, and a portrait of America at war with itself. Self-interest and conflict, betrayal and passion, all fuse into a fateful climax.

Written by award-winning author Richard Buxton, the Shire’s Union trilogy begins with Whirligig, is continued in The Copper Road, and concludes with Tigers in Blue.

The Copper Road (Book #2)

Shire is far, far from home, his old life in Victorian England a fading memory. He’s battled through war-torn America to keep a cherished promise to his childhood companion. Now she’s pushing him away, while the war won’t let him go. Fighting for the Union, Shire must survive the brutal campaign for Atlanta and try to imagine a future without her.

Clara is free from her husband but not from his ghost. After a violent end to an abusive marriage, she struggles to keep her home in the Tennessee hills as the war steals away its treasures and its people.

Tod, a captured Rebel, escapes in Pennsylvania. His encounters on the long road back to his regiment cast the Civil War in a different light. He begins to question his will to fight. Three young lives become wrapped in the Rebels’ desperate need for copper. Friendships, loyalty and love will be tested beyond breaking point. Shire has new promises to keep.

The Copper Road is the second novel from award winning writer Richard Buxton. Book one of Shire’s Union, Whirligig, was shortlisted for the Rubery International Book Award.

Tigers in Blue (Book #3)

Two brutal years in America’s civil war have made a veteran of Shire; his younger English self buried beneath scars and unwanted memories. Unable to help, he watches as Tuck – his Union brother-in-arms – retreats from reality. Both the war and Shire’s heart relentlessly circle him back to Clara, his childhood love. He needs to believe they can share a life beyond the war.

Clara’s home is in ashes. Shire has left her once again to rejoin the fighting further south. She moves west in search of a new start and a past love.

Captain Tod Carter rides with the Confederate Army. He’s obliged to watch over a young lieutenant, fresh to the war and with too many questions; questions that loom large as the army crosses into Tennessee, marching ever closer to Tod’s family.

The western war sweeps towards its climax. The Rebels must risk all in one final campaign. Armies, lives and loves collide to decide who will find their home, and who will find a shallow grave.
